This lake was once also known as Trap Lake according to 1939 U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service surveys.
Three portages lead to Wanihigan Lake making it a sort of crossroads. A short portage to the north leads to Winchell Lake. The portage south through (Grassy) Lake leads to Mulligan Lake. This is the way to go if heading to Brule Lake. A third portage heads west to Cliff Lake. This is another short portage. The route to Cliff Lake leads you over to the Cone Lakes. There used to be a fairly long and difficult portage beteween Winchell Lake and Pup Lake just north of here. The Cliff Lake route replaces that defunct portage as a means for getting over to Davis Lake.
The lake is embedded deep in the Misquah Hills. A steep shoreline surrounds this lake.
The lake is not known for its fishing potential.
Wanihigan Lake drains to the north via a small creek into Winchell Lake.
